Encountering God’s Radical Love

The Bible says that God is love (1 John 4:8). It is not just something He does, it’s who He is. I’ve been practicing saying, “Jesus loves you” to my kids. They say, “Yes, I know,” and then I say, “Do you know how much Jesus loves you?” They look at me like, “Yes, mom. I know.” I keep going by telling them, “He really, really loves you!” Somewhere along the way in our Christian lives, “Jesus loves you” can become cliche, and it’s important to keep our hearts in a posture of receiving His love. It’s such a deep love that we need help understanding it!

I believe that The Father wants us to know that His love is beyond anything we can comprehend. His love is so vast, that Paul prays in Ephesians, “...that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17b-19).  If, in our weakness, He is strong (2 Corinthians 12:9-10), could it be that we need to surrender to this love, and just receive it? We can’t do anything to be loved. He loved us before the foundation of the world.  He loved us before we loved Him. Jesus was sent by the Father to die for a world that didn’t know Him yet (John 3:16).

Encountering God’s Love

Recently, God asked me to take a break from social media and from reading the news. He even asked me to take a break from praying for world events! I felt my heart skip a beat, while my mind tried to unravel the thoughts I had about this. How could I stop praying for the lost? God whispered, “Trust me to take care of them.” He and I are on a retreat, and I am getting filled up again. I can only love myself as much as I allow God to love me. I can only love my neighbor to the degree that I love myself (Mark 12:30-31). This love is such a beautiful mystery. True love comes from the Father. It is pure and deep and everlasting. Ask Him to encounter you with His love!

God Multiplies When We Obey

The Bible says that when we love God, we obey His commandments. Obedience, in love, releases breakthrough in our lives. We are the salt of the earth, and could it be that we lose our saltiness when we are not in love? We love others when we are full of love! Stay close to God’s heart, and you will see Him and hear Him better. You will walk in His will and His way when you know how much He loves you. Lovers will go to the ends of the earth for each other! Whatever is done without love is like a resounding gong (1 Corinthians 13). If you’re finding yourself striving and discouraged by your own efforts, take a break and receive His love. He might ask you to do something outside of your box, but when you obey and surrender, you position yourself to grow. God wants to do so much in you and through you! He’ll take what little you have and multiply it through His love!
