Prophecy: The Wagging Tongues Shall Fall

It was a season when tongues were wagging against us faster than the speed of light. I could feel the fiery darts—the false accusations, the word curses and the slander—coming at me from several directions. My shield of faith was up as high as I could lift it, but the darts were relentless.

I had done all I could do, so I started standing. But I didn’t just stand—I stood in the presence of God. That’s when I heard the Lord say, “The wagging tongues will fall.” I had never heard Him say anything like that, so I started studying Scripture to get more revelation. What I discovered infused me with faith to keep standing until the tongues fell—and they did.

First, let’s define a wagging tongue. A wagging tongue is a tongue that is in motion—it’s chattering and gossiping. A wagging tongue stirs the pot, sows seeds of discord, and releases deadly poison into the ears of those who don’t have enough sense not to listen. A wagging tongue is an untamed tongue. It’s fleshly, carnal or even demonic and so is the wisdom it releases.

Wagging Tongues and Wandering Minds

When wagging tongue attacks come at you, imaginations will start hitting your mind—and the minds of others around you. Those imaginations, if not cast down, will cause people who once vowed to stand with you until Jesus comes back to suddenly turn against you.

Here’s an example: A woman in our church was healed of severe elbow pain. She thought she needed surgery but God healed her miraculously and she was pain-free. She was at the church every time the doors were open, until she started listening to the wagging tongues sowing seeds of discord.

This woman’s integrity was so poor that she stood in the lobby and said she was going to be gone for a while, but she was watching online and she was still standing with us. Later, we found out she was telling people she was against us, and that she wasn’t going to come back because she could “get a prophetic word anywhere.”

Another woman left under the guise of taking a business course, which she claimed was all day every Sunday at another church. The course, she said, ran for nine months. It didn’t take a prophet to root out that lie. No church would hold a business seminar all day Sundays for nine months, thereby taking people out of their home church. But she didn’t have the courage to tell us she was leaving.

In both cases, these women knew in their heart what they were doing is wrong. But they listened to the wagging tongue over the voice of God. In both cases, these women allowed their tongues to start wagging against us. In both cases, these women ended up in difficult positions in life because they agreed with the wagging tongue instead of every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

The Fate of Tongue Waggers

We have to pray for the tongue waggers because the Bible commands us to love our enemies—those who are hostile against us—and to bless those who curse us and to pray for those who abuse us (see Luke 6). We have to pray for the tongue waggers because they are going to reap from the evil seed of discord they sowed and the words they spoke against you if they don’t repent.

Consider Psalm 64:8, “Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.” And again Proverbs 18:7, “A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.” And again Psalm 140:9 offers, “May the heads of those who surround me be covered in the trouble their lips have caused.”

Scripture does not lack warnings about how we use our mouths. If we will give account for every idle word we speak, how much more so for the gossip, libel, slander, word curses and lies we speak? The reality is, any of us can give into the temptation to wag our tongue. That’s why we need to be slow to speak. Any of us can give into the temptation to listen to a wagging tongue. That’s why we need to consecrate our ears to His voice.

If tongues are wagging against you, remember, “The wagging tongues shall fall.”
